Some cybercriminals use fake ads posted on classifieds sites to collect phone numbers of potential victims. They then contact people via WhatsApp or other messaging services and send intimidating messages or threats of violence.
In these cases, it is essential not to panic, not to respond and to immediately contact the relevant authorities.
In this article, we explain how to recognise these situations and what actions to take to protect yourself.
How does the scam works (“Hitman Scams”)?
Scammers post fake ads with the sole purpose of obtaining the phone numbers of those who contact them. After collecting the data, they send intimidating messages in which:
- They pretend to be “hitmen” or contract criminals;
- They threaten to send violent people to the victim’s or their family members’ home;
- They demand a payment in money to avoid alleged attacks or retaliation;
- They send graphic images or photos of weapons to instill fear and pressure the victim into paying.
These messages constitute a serious crime and are part of an extortion attempt.
What to do if you receive such a message?
If you receive intimidating messages or threats from strangers via WhatsApp or other channels:
- Do not respond to the messages and do not make any payment.
- Do not share personal data, photos or other information with the scammer.
- Collect and keep all available evidence:
- phone number from which the message originated;
- screenshots of the conversations;
- any images or content received;
- link to the ad (if present).
- Immediately file a report with the relevant authorities (Postal Police or Carabinieri).
- Also contact our support team, sending all the collected evidence.
This information is essential to identify those responsible, block the involved ads and take security countermeasures.
How to behave in case of blackmail (“Blackmail Scams”)?
Blackmail is a criminal practice that involves threatening a person to obtain money or other benefits.
The most common cases involve:
- Fake lawyers who threaten imaginary legal action demanding payment;
Advertisers who threaten to publish personal data or private photos online if they do not receive money.
In case of blackmail:
- Do not accept any payment requests.
- Immediately file a report with the authorities.
Send us a report attaching all evidence (phone number, ad link, chat screenshots).
How to recognize a financial scam (“Payment or Fake Services Scams”)?
Another common type of fraud involves requests for advance payment for services that will never be provided. Typically, the scammer:
- Contacts the victim via WhatsApp after a response to an ad;
- Requests an advance payment for a service or appointment;
Once the money is received, blocks the victim and disappears.
In these cases:
- Do not send money before verifying the authenticity of the ad;
- If you have already paid, collect evidence and send an immediate report;
- File a report with the Postal Police.
The authorities are the only ones competent to intervene in cases of threats or blackmail. Your report helps us quickly block fake ads and protect other users from illegal behaviour.
